FluentLab is free English practice for people who are already good at English and want to be precise. It covers the choices that separate B2 from C1: which breaking verb, which reporting verb, which half of a confusable pair.

How the items are written

Each word family is written out by hand first: what every member means, the one feature that separates it from its neighbours, and the collocations you should be able to produce. The exercises are then generated from that description, so the context in every sentence makes exactly one answer defensible. A distractor that is also arguable is the most common failure in generated language exercises, and it is the thing this pipeline is built to avoid.

There are currently 573 live items across 19 word families, 26 confusable pairs and 13 grammar topics. Every item carries its own explanation; an item without one never goes live.

The level estimate

Your level is a single number from 0 to 100, mapped onto the CEFR bands. Every item has a difficulty on the same scale, and each answer nudges your estimate towards or away from it, by an amount that depends on how surprising the answer was. Getting a hard item right moves the estimate further than getting an easy one right.

Your data

There is no account and no login. Your progress lives in this browser under a random identifier, and you can delete it from the progress page at any time. Anonymous answer records — which item, right or wrong, how long it took — are kept so that badly calibrated items can be found and retired. Nothing in that record identifies you.

There are no advertising cookies and no third-party analytics.
